Pancreatic Diseases

Pediatric pancreatic diseases affect digestion and insulin production. Treatment depends on the underlying condition, whether acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency, or cystic fibrosis-related pancreatic disease.

Acute Pancreatitis

  • Causes: Infections, medications, gallstones, high triglycerides, trauma

  • Symptoms: Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, other system involvement like respiratory, kidney, etc

Treatment

  • Hospitalization for IV Fluids & Pain Management

  • Fasting (Bowel Rest) for 24-48 Hours → Gradual reintroduction of diet

  • Pancreatic Enzyme Supplements (If Needed)

  • Antibiotics for Infection-Related Cases

Surgical & Endoscopic Treatments for Severe Cases

  • ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) → Removes pancreatic duct blockages or gallstones

  • Pancreatic Stent Placement → Opens blocked pancreatic ducts

  • Partial Pancreatectomy → For severe chronic pancreatitis or tumors

  • Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Cell Transplant → Rare cases where the pancreas is removed
